Services
for Families
and Young People
This
department offers a whole range of services for families and young
people:
The
JDA library stocks a wide range of books (non-fiction and fiction)
and videos (signed and subtitled) covering issues related to deafness,
hearing loss and sign language. These resources are of interest
to deaf and hard of hearing people, BSL students, parents, carers
and professionals working with deaf children.
Library membership costs £5 per family, per year. Up to three
items (ie books or videos) may be borrowed for up to one month at
a time.
Contact the JDA for information on opening times.

Sign Language in Judaism
The
JDA is currently working on a new publication entitled 'Sign Language
in Judaism' - the first ever British Sign Language dictionary of
signs related to Judaism, with an explanation of Jewish terms.
Through this book, interpreters, rabbis, BSL students and deaf children
will have access to Judaism in sign language - particularly useful
for sign language interpreted and explanatory synagogue and religious
services.
The book is currently in the last stages of production and will
be available to buy from the JDA in 2003. Please watch this space
for more updates and information.

The
Chat Room and Internet Cafe
The Chat Room is the JDA's hot venue, boasting contemporary style
funky décor, comfortable sofas and chairs and the brightest
pool table in town!
Tucked away all on its own, in the roof of the JDA community centre,
the room is completely self-contained with vending machines serving
snacks, cold drinks and delicious coffee, wide screen television,
DVD player, X-Box and state of the art Hi-Fi. Just the place to
relax with friends!
There is also a bank of computers available for use in the internet
café with printing facilities. Here, computer skills classes
take place twice a week - taught in British Sign Language by a Deaf
tutor.
The Chat Room is available to all Jewish Deaf Association members
and their friends and is used for various activities and events
for young people
