DEAF CHILDREN INVITED TO 'PRIVATE WONDERLAND'
OF PETS AND FARM LIFE!
To see more photos from this event click here
A record number of hearing and deaf parents and their deaf
or hard of hearing children (and siblings) had the time
of their lives on Thursday 22nd July, when around forty
attend an all-day party hosted by the owners of a 'private
wonderland' in Hertfordshire. The event follows last year's
highly successful summer outing, which took place at Finchley
fire station and was attended by around 30 children and
adults.
The anonymous benefactors opened their gardens and farm
for the day so that the children - who are aged up to 11
- can 'see farm life for themselves' in a day packed with
fun and adventure. It was overwhelming to see the joy and
the smiles in the children's faces as they took part in
a treasure hunt, where they were given bright coloured buckets
to fill in their findings, such as an acorn, horse shoe,
feathers, hay and much, much more! All kids were awarded
with a certificate of achievement and a medal for taking
part.
Following the treasure hunt they played on a 'mock' beach,
which we called 'Miami Beach!' It was an area build up with
sand. This was followed by each child having the opportunity
to ride the beautiful horses and have a chance to stroke
some adorable new foals!.
After
a slap up lunch of hot dogs and snacks the children continued
to stroke the family pets, walk along the woodland trail,
feed the ducks, and had a go at berry picking in the beautiful
grounds. This kept all families amused throughout the day.
To top it all up all the kids had a ride on a quad bike
and a tractor and judging by their faces they just didn't
want to day to end!.
All kids were given JDA baseball
caps to wear during the day and took them home as souvenirs
as a memory of the wonderful and exciting day they had.
We would like to say and enormous thanks to the benefactors
for opening their farm to each and everyone of us and for
helping make the day such a huge success.
JDA Executive Director, Sue Cipin, says; 'These annual
events are a hugely enjoyable way of bringing together hearing
parents and their children who have a hearing loss, especially
as siblings are also included in the fun. The events form
an important part of our Family Services Department, with
informal groups that meet regularly throughout the year
and a network of support services that only the JDA can
provide.'
Any queries about the family and children's group please
contact Jacqui Press at the JDA.

MONDAY 16th FEBRUARY
Parents
and Children's Tea Party
 |
We were delighted to welcome
two new parents to our parents and childrens' group
on Monday 16th February.
Yet again it was an afternoon of mayhem and madness
when children between the ages of
2 months to 10 years once again dominated the JDA centre!
|
A variety of
activities were arranged and lead by our own party entertainer
Susu Selkus. With the children entertained the parents had
time to network, catch up on the latest news and information.
Due to the success of
last years 'Summer Outing' to Finchley Fire Station,
a small discussion was held to get together some ideas
for the forthcoming event, which is currently being
organised.
All parents expressed an interest in becoming more involved
in helping to organise future get togethers. |

The
JDA organised a summer outing to Finchley Fire Station
for the 28th July 2003.
It
was a resounding success! Up to eleven parents and their
children got together for a tour of Finchley Fire Station.
We had two wonderful and helpful fireman called Carl
and Robert, who have been working in the service for
more than 10 years! They started off by showing us around
the Fire Station.
|
| The
children and their brothers and sisters were allowed to
try out the fire hoses, try on uniforms and treated to
special rides on the Fire Truck! They were shown how to
lift heavy vehicles with special equipment and shown how
to put on firemen's' uniforms. It was a wonderful day
out and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves they
were so excited and keen to see so much!. |

|
Once
the tour was over the parents and children came back to
the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the JDA's community
centre in North Finchley, for tea, cakes and ice cream.
After tea they were entertained with colourful hand made
creations with our entertainer Su-Su. |
The
outing was a good opportunity for parents and children
in similar situations to meet up, share experiences and,
hopefully, make new friends. Children of all ages came
along, together with their hearing brothers and sisters.
This was a great afternoon out for parents and their children.
There are no other organised social events in the London
area which give Jewish parents of children who are Deaf
or hard of hearing the chance to get together in a safe
and welcoming atmosphere - and very few opportunities
for their children to do likewise. |
|
We
are slowly building up a group of families who are interested
in more regular events and we are very keen to hear
from anyone who would like to join.
If
you are interested or know of anyone who would like
to come along to our events please contact Jacqui

This
outing was publicised in the London Jewish News and
also in the Jewish Chronicle and details of our press
release can be found here:

Toddlers Tea Party
 |
The JDA's Community
Centre in North Finchley was the scene of 'mayhem and
madness' last week when group of young deaf children,
aged one to eight years old, and their hearing parents,
were the star guests at a tea party aimed at bringing
them together and introducing new families to the group.
It was a wonderful afternoon and provided a unique opportunity
for parents of deaf children to meet each other and share
experiences and information. |
Some of the parents had already met each
other through the Parents Link but for others it was their
first visit to the JDA.
| Creative
activities (such as cooking with chocolate! was provided
for the children, whilst the parents chatted with the
JDA staff and each other. |
 |
 |
This
kind of contact is highly important, as many hearing parents
of deaf children are concerned with the lack of information
elsewhere and benefit greatly by joining our Parents Link
as they are able to relate and learn from each other. |
Due to the overwhelming success of the afternoon
it was decided that there would be another parents and toddlers
get together in July 2003. All new parents are welcome and
anyone interested in either the tea party or becoming part
of the Parents Link can contact Jacqui Press at the JDA.

Information
and Support
At
the JDA we provide parents with a friendly, welcoming place
to come to for practical support, unbiased information and
guidance - including information on outside services. Most
importantly, we constantly update our information to enable
parents to make informed choices.
Our
parent's network includes informal gatherings and one-to-one
chats, providing parents with an opportunity to discuss common
issues and areas of concern. Parents find these links invaluable
as it allows them to share ideas and information and help
build friendships for their children.
Talks
Working
in conjunction with the North London Deaf Children's Society
(NLDCS), the JDA holds Parents' Evenings based on the theme
"Everything I always wanted to know but had nobody to
ask". These evenings tackle various topics of particular
interest to parents of deaf children and areas covered in
2002 were:
If
anyone would like to attend or participate in the talks please
contact Mira Goldberg at the JDA.
Practical solutions
At
the JDA's Resource & Technology room, everybody can receive
professional guidance in relaxed surroundings. Here, they
can try out the latest technology available to enable people
with all levels of hearing loss to live independent lives
and see what suits them best. Our trained consultants also
advise on how to obtain various pieces of equipment and are
a mine of information on services provided by outside organisations.
An
independent private consultant visits the Jewish Deaf Association
every month to give free, one-to-one advice on hearing aids.
