PARENTS
TALK
THURSDAY 18th
SEPTEMBER 2003
ARE YOU COMMUNICATING CLEARLY
WITH YOUR CHILD?
"A
most valuable experience, great to learn from others"
"It helps to hear of other experiences"
"Very interesting speakers"
"Plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss a
variety of issues"
These are a few of the comments made by parents
of deaf and hard of hearing children who attended our last
Parents Evening.
When you have a deaf child, there is so much information to
take on board, and the NLDCS are working together with the
JDA to help you through the labyrinth and make the right decisions
for your child.
Our guest speaker was a qualified Teacher
of the Deaf who has many years' experience working with
deaf children. She spoke about the importance of getting communication
right for deaf children, focusing on the importance of early
communication in relation to a child's wellbeing and how clear
communication is vital for a child's educational progress.
It was a very successful evening and many
questions were answered. If you would like to know more about
this talk contact Jacqui Press who will be able to provide
you a summary of the talk.

SUPPORT,
ADVICE, GUIDANCE, INFORMATION ....
The
JDA offers support not only for deaf children, but also for their
parents, who often welcome the opportunity to get together with
other parents in the same situation, to discuss issues and share
ideas and information. Hearing parents with deaf children need to
consume a mountain of information to be sure that they are making
the right choices for their child. The JDA put parents in touch
with each other, to share ideas and information.
Other services and facilities at the JDA that may interest parents
include:
- A parents link up meeting in North London and sharing experiences
with each other
- A Resource and Technology Room, where you can ask for advice
and try out technological aids for people with a hearing loss,
from a comprehensive display
- A library that stocks a vast range of books and videos on deaf-related
matters that would interest parents and children
- Sign language classes for beginners
- A hearing aid consultant who visits the JDA to give free, impartial
advice on hearing aids
A message from Sue Cipin, Executive Director:
"We're here, and we want to help. Maybe it's a speaker
on a topic of particular interest, a training session, or a chance
to meet successful deaf youngsters to find out their views ... whatever
it is, please let us know what you would like the JDA to do for
you!"
