Membership Rules

There are three categories of members as follows:

1. Ordinary Member

a) An individual who is Jewish and Deaf* and who is habitually resident in the United Kingdom and who is over 18 years old.

b) A person who is not Jewish by birth and/or not Deaf but who is married to a paid-up JDA member is eligible as an Ordinary member.

2. Junior Member

An individual who is Jewish and Deaf* and who is habitually resident in the United Kingdom and who is over 11 but under 18.

In the event of a young person becoming 18 during his/her last year as a Junior Member, he/she will remain a Junior Member until the following December 31st in which he/she becomes eligible for the Ordinary Member status.

* The word "Deaf" is taken to mean the following: -
a) Deaf and Blind/Partially Blind
b) Deafened
c) Hard of Hearing
d) Partially Deaf
e) Profoundly Deaf
f) Any other types of deafness not covered above.

NOTES:
Anybody, who does not come under any of the membership categories above, shall be considered for membership by the Central Committee.


A. Application for Membership - Terms and Conditions

1. Application for new membership must be approved by the Central Committee in the following circumstances:

a) If the person applying for membership has never been a member of the Jewish Deaf Association before

b) If the person has completed his/her suspension period (see section B).

2. Application for membership of the Jewish Deaf Association must be sent to the Treasurer of the Central Committee and accompanied by:

a) The appropriate membership subscription form
b) Subscription fee.

3. New members paying between 1st January and 30th June are members for the full year - i.e. to 31st December.

Those joining from 1st July onwards pay for the six months to 31st December. Their fees are half of the yearly fees.

4. For existing members, fees are to be paid in full within two months (no later than the end of February) otherwise a visit fee to the Jewish Deaf Association's premises shall be paid each time.

Unpaid members after February can rejoin the Jewish Deaf Association and follow the ruling above.

5. Non-members, who do not qualify for membership or do not intend to join the Association but who wish to visit the premises to participate in its activities, shall pay a fee per visit.

6. Cases of hardships in paying subscriptions due to long illness or being unwaged shall be considered by the Central Committee upon receipt of written application.

B. Cessation of Membership

1. If the Central Committee is of the opinion that it is in the best interests of the Jewish Deaf Association that an individual should cease to be a member, it has the power to suspend his/her membership accordingly.

2. If a suspended member completes his/her suspension period and wishes to rejoin the Jewish Deaf Association, he/she can do so, following membership ruling 1b).
