JDA Deaf staff and guests enjoy Sunday’s quiz night

The Jewish Deaf Association’s Hear! Hear! committee raised over £11,000 at their Hollywood Nights quiz evening attended by 200 people at Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue.
The money will go towards the support of elderly Deaf and Deafblind people who are confined to their homes and isolated without the help of the JDA, which offers them a range of services to ensure they have access to medical, financial and welfare care as well as providing them with Day Centre facilities and a social life amongst their lifelong Deaf friends at the JDA.
Sunday’s event was fully accessible for all Deaf members of the audience with the support of a British Sign Language interpreter.
In addition, for hard of hearing guests all quiz questions and spoken words were typed up and displayed on a large screen by a palantypist – a speech-to-text operator – supplied by the JDA.
“The evening was a wonderful example of how people with a hearing loss can participate fully in communal events,” said Sue Cipin, Executive Director of the Jewish Deaf Association.
“More than one in two people over 65 experience hearing loss and we would urge other organisations to contact the JDA when they are arranging events – we will be delighted to advise them on how to make their events accessible to people with a hearing loss.”
