We are delighted to announce that the JDA has been awarded a grant of £172,511 (over 3 years) from The Big Lottery Fund.
Sue Cipin received congratulations from the Grants Officer on our top quality application to the Lottery’s Reaching Communities programme.
The aim of the Reaching Communities Programme is to create “healthier and more active communities”. The grant will fund some salary costs to help continue Day Centre and Support Services from 2010 to 2012.
The Day Centre creates a more active community by bringing older Deaf and Deafblind people to our Community Centre every week. Without Day Centre, many of our older members would be isolated and lonely. At Day Centre they enjoy stimulating activities and outings and have the chance to stay in touch.
Support Services creates a healthier community by accompanying JDA members to medical appointments, to help them understand what the doctor or practitioner is saying, and also to give support and help with monitoring medication, nutrition and healthy living. It is important that each person understands his/her condition fully to make informed decisions about their own health matters. Feeling supported and in control of their situation reduces stress and gives people a sense of wellbeing.
