Maccabi Community Fun Run May 2010

On Sunday, May 23rd, over 1,000 men, women and children gathered at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Elstree for the Maccabi Community Fun Run. The day was absolutely glorious, and the mood and atmosphere were excellent. Everyone was there to run 1K, 5K or 10K to support their favourite charities.
The JDA had its biggest team ever with 26 people joining in. Two year old Harry Moss, son of Melody and Jon and grandson of members, Lorraine and Kenneth Silver, strolled through the 1K. Five year old Natan Collis ran the 1K, accompanied by his mother, Alexis (participant of Family services). Our lovely member Anne Senchal took part, and she said she would like to train for next year's 5K!
JDA Chairman, Trudy Kling ran and survived the 10K, accompanied by her niece Isabelle Janner. The Coe family (Jody Sacks from Family Services) with deaf daughter Gemma, 15, her husband Robert, a JDA Trustee, and Jody’s parents all the way from South Africa, also joined in the 5K. Other members who enthusiastically joined in the fun were Ben Leigh, Golda Dahan and Deafblind member Michael Corney accompanied by interpreter/guides, Edith and Maria.
A big thanks to Ruth and David Myers who did a wonderful job manning our stall on a very hot and sticky day! Our dear member Israel Itzkowitz turned up to support our team, having taken 4 different modes of transport to arrive!
The event was a huge success, raising over £5,600 for the JDA!
Thank you so much to everyone who supported this fantastic event.
You can still sponsor our runners by going to the Justgiving Fundraising Page and making a credit card donation on Justgiving website or send a cheque to th JDA with 'Fun Run' written on the back.

JDA raises £20,000 at Valentine's Day Quiz 14 February 2010

More than 150 people put their brains to the test last weekend to raise funds for the country’s only specialist charity for the Jewish deaf community.
Hampstead Garden Suburbs’ Norrice Lea Synagogue played host on Sunday to the Valentine’s Day supper quiz run by Barnet based Jewish Deaf Association.
And romance was definitely in the air with questions including identifying famous couples, naming films from romantic scenes and courting throughout history.
The event, the fifteenth annual fundraiser the charity has organised, raised in excess of £20,000 making it among the most successful to date.
The funds will help to ensure that when hospitalised or in need of medical assistance, members are provided with an interpreter where no other organisation will coordinate or pay for them. Without this help deaf patients can feel lonely, isolated and immensely vulnerable at an already worrying time.
Executive Director Sue Cipin said: “We are so grateful for the support shown to us through this event; both by the volunteer committee who organised it and of course everyone who responded to our appeal.
“Every penny of the money raised will go towards one of the most important and intensive elements of our work. Without the support workers on tap for our members when they are in hospital or in need of a medical professional they can often be left completely unable to understand or be understood by the very people who have their lives in their hands. With the support workers we are eradicating the isolation that no human being – deaf or otherwise – deserves.”
And in addition to all of this work, the JDA offers an enormous variety of practical and emotional support to deaf people of all ages, from day centres to a dedicated library, a specialist technology and information centre and a programme for parents of deaf children, plus much more.
But with a community fun run and fundraising theatre experience in the pipeline, Ms Cipin is aware that they simply cannot afford to become complacent about their finances.
She added: “As our members get older the demand on this part of our work increases and we are completely reliant on the generosity of our supporters; without it we simply would cease to exist. However much we raised at this event there is always more that needs to be done to secure our financial future further.”

Maccabi Community Fun Run
Sunday 24 May 2009

The event was a big success for the JDA in a few ways. First of all, we managed to raise upwards of £8,000.
The run was also a great way of raising the profile of JDA in the public’s eye. Two pictures of our team appeared in the Jewish News.
It was very exciting that so many of us who hold the JDA dear to our hearts teamed up to make this a really great event. Among us were Board Members, Hear Hear Committee Members, JDA Staff, Children of staff, Parents of deaf children, Deaf and Deafblind members with Communicator Guides, and family and loved ones of the above! Click here for photos of the fun run!
Many thanks to Sharon Graham for setting up our stall, Jessie Jessel, Judith Morgan and daughter Deborah for manning the stall and Harvey Clements for taking pictures. Also, thanks to Edith and Maria for their special participation.
Everyone was a star!
I hope you will all put this event on your calendar for next year. It’s never too early to start training!
