Talk - 'Diamonds' |

They say “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” but how much do you really know about them?
What are the important 4 C’s to consider when you are buying a diamond?
Where in the world do diamonds come from and how did they affect the history of the places where they are found?
You may have noticed a lot of news stories about conflict diamonds or blood diamonds. Gavin Ellis will join us to discuss this hot topic.
Gavin is a qualified jeweller and is a student on the JDA’s BSL Level 1 course.

Shuttleworth Collection and Swiss Garden Outing
|

This will be a day with plenty to see. There is a beautiful garden
to enjoy if the weather is good and lots of interesting things indoors if it is raining.
The Shuttleworth Collection is based at Biggleswade in Bedfordshire and shows the history of flight from the early 1900’s to the 1940’s with a collection of 40 lovingly restored vintage and rare aeroplanes, along with a number of old cars, motorbikes and bicycles.
The romantic Swiss Garden is next to the Shuttleworth Collection and has a beautiful nine acre garden that has changed little since it was designed in the early 19th century. Order a hot meal from the café or bring your own packed lunch, whichever you prefer.
To enjoy this unique day out please contact the JDA to book a place and send your payment.

Irene's last BSL class specially for members! |
It was so long ago that Irene Spielsinger started teaching BSL for the JDA we can only estimate that it all began in 1992 at the Norwood Family Centre.
Since then so many students have passed happily through her classes with excellent exam results.
We have been through many changes together over the years, new premises and many, many changes to the CACDP courses. Irene has remained smiling through it all, even when her patience has been tested to the limit!
Irene wanted to retire from teaching quite a while ago now but we managed to persuade her to stay. Now the time has finally come to let go of our beloved Level 1 teacher.
Irene would like to celebrate her retirement with the members. So, before she leaves teaching for good, she is going to teach one final, special BSL class - and the members will be her students! Irene will lead us in some BSL games and we will have a fun experience of what it is like to be one of her students!
Please join us for this fun afternoon filled with games and laughter.

Talk - 'My Expedition to the North Pole'
|

Oliver Westbury will come and give a powerpoint presentation about his tough expedition to the North Pole in April to raise money for the National Deaf Children’s Society.
Oliver became one of the first two deaf people ever to reach the North Pole. He was featured earlier this year on See Hear, before he went on his expedition.
It was a brilliant achievement for the team to struggle on foot to reach the North Pole in five days! Oliver will show photographs and explain how he and his team trekked to the North Pole, facing difficult obstacles.
This will be a fascinating evening, so do come along and learn all about the North Pole Expedition. Admission: £3. To book a place, please email Kay.

Talk - 'Hens, Horses and Bees' |

Seth Belson is an optometrist by profession and has a practice in Essex as well as a smallholding where he farms his land in Ware in Hertfordshire.
Seth and his wife Fiona have geese, chickens, bees and a horse. They are the only producers of free range eggs with a white shell. These are specially produced for the religious Jewish community, so do come and find out why.
There are not many Jewish smallholders around so come along to this lively and entertaining talk with some honey samples just in time for Rosh Hashanah.

Talk - 'Pension Awareness' |
Some members asked for a talk that was given at Harrow Age Concern regarding changes to The Pension Service. But The Pension Service say that the changes only apply to people who have not yet reached pensionable age.
As most of our Wednesday Club members are already pensioners, Jeremy Tarlow will be joining us from The Pension Service, to talk about what The Pension Service can do for you. He will explain the different benefits and entitlements and how to claim them.
Jeremy will also include information about the State benefit changes for those people who are not pensioners yet.
Come to this informative talk presented in BSL to get full information about your entitlements.
